There is even a short story included to introduce the history of pumpkin carving. You can either give small groups one pumpkin to share, or do the activity as a whole group.

In this mini-unit, students will:

• READ a short passage about pumpkins (or read aloud one of the suggested anchor texts provided in the resource)

• MEASURE the certain parts of the pumpkin (height, weight, circumference...etc..).

• OBSERVE the properties of the pumpkins (color, shape, special features...etc..).

• SHOW their knowledge of pumpkins such as how they grow, what they need to grow and things you can do with pumpkins.

• CARVE the pumpkin and further discover the properties of the pumpkin on the inside - we use simple and safe pumpkin cutting tools found at my local grocery store, but as an alternative, you can already have the tops cut off, and then placed back on, to eliminate the need for cutting.

• WRITE a narrative about going to a pumpkin patch.

Students are sure to love this holiday activity!
